Recycling of rechargeable batteries
April 17, 2003 - Télébec Mobilité recently signed an agreement with its authorized agents and the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) to set up drop off sites for rechargeable batteries at most of the company’s agents. Télébec Mobilité is accordingly asking cell phone users, and others who use rechargeable batteries, to drop off their spent batteries at these collection sites. It’s a great way to do something tangible to protect the environment.
“Rechargeable batteries are used to power not only cell phones but also cordless phone, laptops, cameras and other electronic products,” says Natalie Frackleton, General Manager – Product Management. “Now, thanks this agreement with our authorized agents, we can add rechargeable batteries of any sort to the list of recyclable materials—newspapers, plastic, glass and aluminium. Our agents have agreed to collect recyclable batteries and ship them to RBRC.”
RBRC, a non-profit organization, sends the recycled rechargeable batteries to reclamation facilities where they are used to manufacture new products. For example, the cadmium is used to make new batteries and the nickel and iron to make stainless steel products.
The 25 authorized agents participating in this recycling program are listed on Télébec Mobilité’s website at www.telebecmobilite.com.
