Télébec Mobilité puts its next-generation high-speed wireless network into operation 2004-08-18

August 18, 2004 - Due to investments close to one million dollars, Télébec Mobilité today put its next-generation (1x Radio Transmission Technology or 1xRTT) high-speed wireless network into operation throughout its digital territory. The enhanced network will improve the experience for Télébec Mobilité’s digital subscribers by giving them access to a multitude of new advanced services.

“With this next-generation network going into service today, our digital subscribers have taken a big step into the future,” said Télébec President and Chief Executive Officer Roch Dubé. “They now have the benefits of a more high-performance, faster, simpler and more universal network as well as access to a wider range of advanced services.”

The next-generation high-speed wireless network improves the experience for Télébec Mobilité subscribers because of 3 basic features:

  • Higher throughput: Resulting in faster and more convenient access to data, shorter connection and download times, and increased mobile productivity.
  • Transmission by packet switching: With this, subscribers are billed for the amount of data uploaded and downloaded instead of time online.
  • Permanent connection: This means more:
    • simplicity by not having to reconnect to send or receive data;
    • instant delivery of email and other data by not having to reconnect.

The 1x network also gives Télébec Mobilité the benefits of advanced new services such as:

  • Mobile Navigator: Access to advanced Internet content through the phone screen;
  • Telegr@f: Text messaging service that enables users to exchange messages if they have compatible cellphones;
  • Email: sending and receiving;
  • Photo messaging: sending and receiving photos, downloading images to customize phones or create albums;
  • Downloading: of ring tones, desktop backgrounds and games.

“The investments of these past months strengthen our position as the mobility leader throughout our territory,” said Sylvie Couture, Vice-President, Network Engineering and Chief Technology Officer. “Other investments are in the pipeline: one to separate the existing analogue network from the digital one to better accommodate future technologies; another to build new sites to extend digital wireless network coverage to a larger area. Our network will continuously be upgraded in step with market trends.”

“Activation of the 1x high-speed wireless network represents a milestone in our plan for digital network operation,” said Dubé. “It’s the first phase of third-generation wireless technology. Even more important, it’s a concrete means of improving the wireless experience for our subscribers, which is a priority for Télébec.”
