Télébec is proud to announce that, since June 15th, as part of the federal government’s Broadband for Rural and Northern Development Pilot Program, residents of Arntfield, Évain, and Rollet, in the Rouyn-Noranda area, have access to High Speed Internet.
Once work is completed, Télébec, a partner in the project developed by the Centre des technologies de l’information et des communications de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue (CTICAT), will provide High Speed Internet access to a total of 46 municipalities in the region. The new fibre optic network will extend more than 1 500 kilometres and High Speed Internet access will be available through either the cable or telephone network. The fibre optic network will provide High Speed Internet to 350 government and municipal offices, schools, and Algonquin communities.
A project totalling over $20 million dollars
The project requires investments totalling $20.6 million dollars and is jointly funded by the federal and provincial governments, Télébec, the school boards, and the municipalities.
Télébec has pledged $5.1 million dollars towards the project, which will provide thousands of citizens with cutting edge equipment and improve their quality of life. Some of the important uses for High Speed Internet include telemedicine, distance education, telecommuting, and electronic commerce.
Paving the way for a multitude of telecommunications services, the broadband network was developed thanks to a collaboration between private enterprise, governments, and local stakeholders: a partnership that Télébec commends.
